Special education teachers being taken for granted

People give Math, Science and Social Studies teachers a lot of the credit while Special Education teachers are not given as much. Special Education teachers have to take the time to learn about each student that they have to work with, they need to make a connection with the student. They put a lot of time and energy into their job and do not get enough respect back for it.

According to CFNC.org, over the next 10 years there is a 35 percent growth rate for special education teachers. 13 percent of the 380,000 special education teachers in the world leave their jobs each year and 50 percent will leave their job in five years. A reason of the leaving rate being so big at a short period of time is because they do not get enough appreciation for all the hard work that they do.

Not only is public support an issue, so is parent support. Parents are not taking as much interest in their child’s education, most just care if their son is athletic enough or if their daughter is pretty enough. Having a child in a special education class may be the hard part because they could be in there for a variety of reasons such as learning, mental, emotional and physical disabilities. The parents with special needs kids already have a more difficult situation than any other parent but that does not mean they do not need to appreciate the teachers that are putting in extra work to help their child succeed. These teachers are spending more time and energy into the children they work with than their own family at home.

Math teachers deal with Math, Science teachers deal with Science and so on but Special Education teachers deal with any and every subject there is. They have to help the children with whatever they are struggling with. Not only do they have to help them, they have to figure how they learn best. They make a connection with each and every student, they are not in it for the money. Payscale.com shows that high school teachers make up to $21.41 an hour whereas Special education teachers only make up to $14.69 an hour.

All in all Special Education teachers are not giving enough credit for all the hard work and time they put in their job.
