Too much homework too little time

Many kids thought school was fun, but later on it became more difficult. Even starting at first grade children feel as if they already do too much. First graders on average have 10-20 minutes of homework per night. Homework peaks to 54 minutes per night in 10th grade.

One thing too much homework can cause is stress. Homework has been the leading cause of stress in teens. Having to do 10-20 minutes a night on class adds up. Having six other classes with 10-20 minutes can lead to the stress of having to finish all homework while continuing daily lives. Nearly 40% of high school parents say their child has experienced overwhelming stress, according to Patti Neighmond of npr.org.

Another effect is no sleep. A typical teenager needs 8.5-9 hours of sleep, which is rarely achieved when finishing homework. No sleep can be caused by doing all the homework, leading to having a worse performance than the previous day. According to M.D. Craig Canapari, lack of sleep can lead to health problems such as developing insulin resistance, anxiety, depression and irritability. Sleepiness is a significant cause of automobile accidents. Without sleep student get up tired and can fall behind the next morning, having to repeat the schedule that made them get behind.

Students also do not get as much free time as they hoped. Having to go to school for seven hours plus one to four hours of homework after does not allow free time, losing the lack of critical life skills. According to Livestrong, teens who have been stressed about homework has a negative effect on the whole family. Teens tend to get irritable, not being able to have free time to do something besides homework.

This does not include the essays or projects needed to be done, leading to more time spent on homework. Stanford News has had a poll and it has been shown that too much homework can lead to health issues such as headaches, exhaustion, sleep deprivation, weight loss and stomach problems. Overall homework has been shown to have effects on sleeping patterns, free time and stress.
