Most students at BHS aspire to know what their futures hold, but one is living his already. Senior Cody Latham attended basic training this summer for 10 weeks from May 26 to August 6. In Fort Benning, Georgia, this training was the start of his career in the Army. He plans to finish his Senior year here at BHS, go through more training, attend college, then pursue his future.

When asked whether it was a good overall experience, Cody Latham had mixed opinions.

“Depends on what you mean by ‘good,’” Cody Latham explained. “It sucked every day, but it was a very rewarding experience, and I learned a lot, not only about my training, but about myself.”

One topic on which the whole family agreed was that the time dragged on, especially at first.

“In the beginning the time dragged,” Cody’s father Tim Latham said. “but then we got into a routine and he was back.”

Both at home and at training, falling into a routine helped the time pass, and soon it was over.

“It felt like it dragged by while I was there, but after a while it sped up,” Cody Latham said. “The days are long but the weeks are fast.”

Although it was a testing experience for most, not everyone was torn up about his leaving.

“I didn’t mind,” sophomore and Cody’s sister Dallas Latham said. “I knew he was gone, but I also knew he was coming back. I also got to use his Xbox One.”

Aside from video games, this endeavor was very influential not only in this student’s plans, but his views and beliefs.

“The best part was doing something that very few people ever choose to do, or are able to do,”  Cody Latham said. “It really gives you a sense of pride.”

Overall, Cody Latham’s summer was much more significant to his future than most carefree holidays.
