BHS students proud of military service

Many students have family in the military.

Senior John Matthews on his experiences having his older brother in the military.

Q: What was your reaction to him leaving?

  • A: “I was glad that he was going to fight for our freedom, but I still worried that he might get hurt.”

Q: What was good about it?

  • A: ”It makes a lot of good stories for family, and it makes me feel good that I had a brother in the military, which I think is the right thing for people to do.”

Q: What was bad about it?

  • A: “Having my brother gone for a year, even though he called home. He would call and tell us nonchalantly that a car bomb went off, that makes you worry about them.”

Q: Where was he deployed?

  • A: “He was deployed in Kandahar Afghanistan.”

Senior Keifer Halpin on his father being in the National Guard.

Q: Who in your family was a part of the military?

  • A: “My father was in the military for just short of 25 years.”

Q: What are some good things about him being in the military?

  • A: “Because he was in so long, he gets bonus checks from the government, which helps a lot around the house.”

Q: What are some bad things about him being in the military?

  • A: “He was in the military until I was ten, so growing up I didn’t have much of a father figure.”

Q: How did you feel about him being deployed?

  • A: “I hated him for it because he was never around,but looking back on it he was doing it to better our family.”

Q: How do you feel about his service to this country?

  • A: “I feel like he did a lot for this country,he was just behind the gun of a tank, but I think he was very beneficial to our military.”

Caleb Othic on how his father was in the Air Force Military Police.

Q: What was good about him being in the military?

  • A: “He was in the Air Force and got injured, so now he gets benefits from the VA so he gets free collage and health care.”

Q: Where was he deployed?

  • A: “He was stationed in Michigan, and was a military police officer. He was going to be deployed in Kuwait, but the war ended before he could be deployed.”

Q: What are some bad things about your father being in the military?

  • A: “He got injured trying to arrest someone who broke into one of the military arsenals, his leg has been messed up ever since then.”

Q: How do you feel about his service?

  • A: ”I think it was good I know that he enjoyed it, and that’s how he met my mom, I wouldn’t be around if he hadn’t served.”

Q: Any other comments?

  • A: “I think he gets a lot of respect from being a veteran, and I am thankful to him and all the other veterans.”
