With the help of Intermediate Center librarian Jill Boyle, and Vintage Park director Shanay McBride, Vintage Park now has a book club. The book club started last Spring, so far about 12 residents are in it.

“The residents were excited, and even filled out the question sheets. The Intermediate Center book club also read the same book,” Boyle said.  The club consists of forty 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. When both book clubs finish the book. They go to Vintage Park to discuss what they read.

“The book club helps the kids in our school to be able to have a group that is not just their classmates; 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders can all get to know each other and have something in common,” Boyle said.

“The book club at Vintage Park is amazing because the residents can talk about their real world experiences,” Boyle said.

“They can talk about what it was like to grow up without cell phones, or T.Vs when they were young, or what they did on hot summer days.  It really gives the kids perspective,” Boyle said.

Boyle is in charge of picking the books they read. She tries to focus on picking books set in the past. So far they have read The Seven Wonders of Sassafras Spring, and Out of the Dust.

Boyle said, “ I have been picking books that are set in the past so the residents can be the experts, and help us understand the book, and the time period more.”

The next book club meeting will take place sometime next spring.
