Survey shows student’s reasons for skipping school

A survey of 50 BHS students that asked if they had ever skipped school, showed that more than half of them did. Of the 28 students who said they skipped school, 11 said they skipped school whenever they could. While only six said they skipped school once a month, five said once or twice a semester and four said once or twice a quarter. Only two students said they usually skipped school once or twice a week.

Students who did not skip school had very strong reason for not doing so.
“I do not skip school, because I do not want to get behind on work,” a student said.

Almost half of the students who said they skipped school said they were sick to get out of school. The rest said they just left or got a parent to take them out of school.

Of the 28 students’ reasons for skipping school, 75% said they skipped school just because they did not feel like going. While four students said it was because they did not study for a test and three said they just did not care about the class. Though some students had other reasons.

“I like to get away from the stresses of school,” a student said.

Almost all of the students who skipped school said they had Mostly Cs or even higher. Only three students had mostly Ds or lower.Even most students who said they skipped school had passing grades or above, teachers think it still affects grades.

“I definitely think skipping school affects academic achievement,” English and Journalism teacher Kit Harris said.
