FBLA encourages preschoolers to enjoy reading

BHS students put on a good show in front of the 4-Year-Old-Program, by reading books to them and helping them comprehend what they just heard.

Around fifteen students traveled over to the Baldwin Primary Center to read short stories and books to the children in Pre-K. This event is an annual affair that goes on within the city’s community. Reading to the younger generation helps the education of literacy. Doing an activity like this good for the younger students, perhaps it would help them to learn how to read and enjoy it.

“Our main goal is to be good role models for the younger society,” leader of FBLA, Patty Lenning said. “Reading to them will hopefully encourage them to be entertained and active by it.”

The 4-year-olds had the choice to choose whatever book they wanted to read. Most of them did not know how to read, so the high school students that went had to opportunity to read to them.

“They really enjoyed it,” sophomore Lauren Peterson commented. “I think they really liked new people coming into their class and getting them involved.”

This event is beneficial to many families, it provides early intelligence to their children before they start kindergarten. Teacher of the 4-Year-Old-Program, Deanna Miley acknowledges this greatly.

“The preschoolers love hearing books and getting the individual attention from the students volunteering to read,” Miley clarified. “I think it’s a great opportunity for the high school students to volunteer and  give back to our school community through their time as well as the books which the donate to my classroom after reading them. I also think it benefits the preschoolers to see big kids still enjoying reading.”
