Students coping with new al a carte guidelines

The new 2014-15 Baldwin High School al a carte options have changed a lot since last year. The rumors from last year about no cookies this year are true. There have been several health changes.

“I don’t really like the changes, I would rather go back to the old way,” sophomore Erin Voigts said.

The options for al a carte are much healthier this year. The cookies have been switched to Uncrustable peanut butter and jelly. All of the chips are baked now and the gatorades are not as large as they were last year. Most everything that can be, has been switched to whole wheat. Several of the drink options have been switched to healthier options, they still have ice cream though.

“About the same number of people come through al a carte this year, maybe a little less than last year and PB&J’s and Cookie Cones are probably the most popular item to buy,” Lori Lederer said.

Apparently about the same amount of people come through al a carte as last year. Cookie Cones and Uncrustable peanut butter and jelly are the most popular item to buy, but even some of the cooks do not agree with the new changes.

“Personally, I wish we could have the cookies back, I miss the monster cookies and I think that it would be better if we went back to the old way,” Lederer said.

Some students do not agree with the changes either.

“I don’t think that the health changes really matter because kids are going to eat the junk food when they get home anyways,” Voigts said.

The BHS school cooks, or any cooks at schools for that matter, do not have control over the al a carte options, it is a federal decision.

“We’ve known for a couple of years that this year was going to be a difficult year because they have to fit all of these regulations into the foods,” principal Rob McKim said.

On the other hand though, some students enjoy the changes.

“I like all of the options for ice cream,” junior Kedzie Hopkins said.
