Girls Basketball Suiting Up For Their Season

As the weather begins to change, the minds of athletes begin to switch to different floors, the heads start to turn of different fans, and the shoes of coaches change as they step foot on the court. Varsity girls basketball head coach Bob Martin is already biting his nails waiting for his season.

“I think this year could be good for us. Granted it will be different than last year, but with having such talented underclassmen in our program, the sky’s the limit. We may not have a lot of height, but we have some fast girls who share a love for the game of basketball,” Martin said.

Although the sports may change, do our athletes still have the same mind set switching from one to the next? The boys and girls who participate in high school sports are not only physically tough, but mentally tough, too. Many students are multiple sports athletes which causes them to be extremely though.

“I believe I am personally ready for the season. Being a senior and having been a starter last year I hope to be able to step into the leadership role that last year’s seniors left. Plus participating in cross country has hopefully prepared me physically,” senior, Taylor Cawley said.

This year is going to be very different for the varsity basketball team. Last year the team possessed six seniors. All six of those girls contributed huge amounts to the program. For the past two years the team has taken a trip to substate, in both they came close to state. Will losing those seniors challenge the team this year? Or will we step up and become older ourselves?

“Having lost six seniors last year we have gaps to fill. But I believe we have young talent, that is willing to step up and fill those gaps and be able to play huge roles in the upcoming season,” Cawley said.
The Bulldogs will play their first game against Tonganoxie high school at 6 p.m. on Dec 1.
