Truth comes out about fears at BHS

Everybody has at least one fear, sometimes fears can be a negative and sometimes they can be a positive, there is more to your fears than you think though.

Fears are just basic natural human emotions, they can be good or bad. Levels of fears can be mild, medium or severe. They can also last for a short amount of time or a long amount of time. When you feel fear, your brain immediately alerts your nervous system causing physical reactions like fast heartbeat, rapid breathing, and an increase in blood pressure. Blood is also pumped to certain muscle areas to prepare you to be able to run fast or possibly even fight. You also start to sweat to keep yourself cooled down.

Sometimes fears come about or become stronger because of a bad experience with something. Sometimes though, there is really no reason to why someone has such a strong fear. It is severely strong due to personality traits and passed down genes. People sometimes think others are silly for having such a severe fear from something that is not that big of a deal. Your brain can actually release hormones though, that make you feel so scared that you think something is scarier than it actually is.

Students at Baldwin High School have a wide variety of fears, from basic fears such as, being scared of the dark to being deathly afraid of crickets.

“I hate crickets because everywhere you go they jump on you, if they even are on a sidewalk I will not walk on that sidewalk,” sophomore Josie Malec said.

Insects appear to be a popular fear among sophomore girls.

“I’m deathly afraid of butterflies because their bodies freak me out and they gross me out, I accidently killed a lot of them at a zoo once,” sophomore Mariah Martin said.

There also seems to be a popularity in a fear of flying things, such as birds.

“It’s the most terrifying thing because they look like they’re coming at you to like attack you or hurt you,” sophomore Bailey Morrison said.

Even though people may think that some fears can be kind of silly. Sometimes they can protect you because you are more alert when you are scared and they can keep you from getting killed. (according to Teens Health)

“Every time I see a knife, I can just feel it stabbing me, I don’t know why but I’m just really terrified of them,” sophomore Josie Gilliland said.
