OPINION: Non-educational apps dominating iPad use

With the introduction of the iPads to our school system this year students can download apps for educational and entertainment purposes. Students are “pushed” apps that are used for educational use. Students are also allowed to download games for their ipads. The question is do students use their ipads more for games or for school work.

Apps like Twitter, Facebook, and Clash of Clans have no real educational value but almost everyone has these app or ones similar to them. Students have their favorite game that they play or a social media app that they use the most. They do not always have a favorite app that has some sort of educational value though.

The purpose of adding the iPads to our school was so that students have an easier way to find information and organize that information once they find it. If students only used their iPads for educational purposes the job that they were meant to do would be fulfilled.

Students do not always do exactly what they are supposed to when it comes to the iPads. Especially when they don’t even have a favorite educational app that they use.

“My favorite app is Jelly Splash, its not educational,” freshman Riley O’Rourke said.

“I have more games, they do not distract me as much as you think,” junior Ben Brungardt said.

These students may make up a majority of the students who use their iPads on a daily basis.
