Help, don’t hurt

Movies show bullying in school as a normal everyday occurrence, but it shouldn’t be. According to MBNBD, 160,000 students miss school every day in fear of other students. Bullying has short-term effects as well as major, long effects. Bullying can lead to stress, fear of coming to school, suicide, and emotional damage.

Short term effects of bullying can cause anger, depression, greater instances of illness, and lower grades according to American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress. These short term effects are not small just because of the word “short.” Anger can lead to problems in the classroom and even at home. Depression leads to inability to want to want to go out and socialize. Lower grades could turn into a long term effect, affecting schooling in upcoming years or even the ability to get a successful job.

Bullying also cause long term effects. Students have even said that bullying is a cause for shooting incidents. Harassment and bullying have been linked to 75% of school-shooting incidents, according to MBNBD. 86% of students said, “other kids picking on them, making fun of them or bullying them” causes teenagers to turn to lethal violence in the schools and even outside of school.

One major long term effect of bullying is suicide or suicidal thoughts. Suicide is the third- leading cause among teens. Bullying victims are 2 to 9 times more likely to think about suicide, according to Anti-Bullying Help. The damages of bullying can not just disappear within a matter of time. It affects the person forever.

According to Ann Steele’s article on the psychological effects of bullying, having psychological effects causes lasting problems. These problems could lead into unhealthy relationships, lessen their self-esteem, make it harder to trust and could possibly affect the future of their career. Being bullied has also been shown to induce eating disorders and major anxiety according to M.D. Randy A. Sansone.
