BHS offers after-school tutoring Monday through Thursday, giving students the opportunity to stay after school for extra help, complete assignments, and improve academically. The program provides a structured and supportive environment for students who may need additional assistance or a quiet place to focus on their work.
Teachers involved in the program say one of their main goals is to be available for students who need support outside of regular class time.
“I like to be available for students who need assistance or somewhere to get work done,” English teacher Leslie Jessip said.
Jessip explained that tutoring gives students a focused space away from distractions and allows them to receive help from teachers in different ways.
“I think it gives a designated space outside of your home where distractions can occur, and students can get other opinions or assistance,” Jessip said.
Teachers also notice patterns when students attend tutoring sessions. Many students take advantage of the opportunity when assignments or tests are coming up.
“It’s usually when things are due that students come in,” Math teacher Rubenangel Zamora.
Zamora explains tutoring benefits students by giving them access to one-on-one help and a quiet environment to complete their work.
“It helps students have a place to work and feel more confident going to class without missing assignments,” Zamora said.
Teachers say the program not only helps students academically, but also builds confidence and encourages responsibility. They continue to support tutoring because they see the positive impact it has on students who choose to attend.
