6th grade is the right age to have a phone.

When should kids get a phone? This is a big debate between parents all around. What is the appropriate age kids should have a phone and are they responsible enough. Getting a phone ranges through all ages, from 2nd to high school or even older.

The beginning of middle school or 6th grade would be the appropriate age to have a cell phone. That’s when kids are now in junior high and are starting to venture off on their own. Many start after school activities or attend more events than they did when they were younger. Majority of the time in 6th grade kids will also start doing independent things by themselves.

This can vary in many ways such as after school sports or being involved in other school activities. The average age for a kid to get a phone now in 2018 is 10-years old. That is much younger than it was a couple years ago. We don’t need to have our kids starting out so young on phones.

Research has shown that kids now compared to ten years ago do not go outside as much as they used. They have a harder time communicating with adults and even having face to face conversations.  The beginning of 6th grade would be the best time to give your kid a phone. They now may need it to figure out ride situation or to ask friends for help on homework or just staying in touch with their parent and they did not have a phone growing up so they do now how to communicate and they do know how to talk face to face.

You would not want a third grader already running around with their very own phone not being responsible with it. Chances are they would break it more likely than a 6th or 7th grader that is using it for an actual purpose and not just for games.

Beginning of 6th grade is the appropriate age for children to get a phone. They need it to communicate with parents and to help them figure out certain situations , such as rides, Homework, or even safety reasons. Any younger and it may cause problems with how they interact with their peers and what they are focused on in their everyday lives.
