Having three yell leaders is a fantastic way to start off the year.

The Baldwin High School cheerleaders have always had great years

competing with bigger and more experienced teams. The 2015-16 cheerleaders have welcomed three new young men onto the squad for the first time in BHS history.

“They are  stronger than us girls,” senior Maddie Schweda said. “We have so much more co-ed now.”

These cheerleaders have always competed at competitions, but this year was going to be different.

“We will being going to four or five competitions,” Schweda said. “In the three past years of cheering, I have never once been to so many competitions with such incredible talent.”

The boys on the cheerleading squad are overruled by the amount of females. They get more attention from the crowd and people who support them, because it’s rare for young men to be cheering without getting made fun of.

“At the beginning you get made fun of a little bit,” senior Spencer Young said. “Honestly, if anything we get more attention than the girls do. We have gained strength, respect and teamwork.”

“Well cheer has been a great experience, and I’ve always wanted to join,” freshman Kaedon Friend said “Of course, I have got made fun of but I have made so many new friends I don’t care about the negativity. I feel like they are my second family.”

This year they will be competing against other teams with a routine that they will perform.

“We are not sure when we will certainly go,” said coach Patty Lenning. “It will be in Andover on Oct. 24 or Nov. 13 of 2015.”
