Changes coming to the qualified admissions

Back in December, the Kansas Board of Regents made a few revisions to the qualified admissions, or Kansas Scholars curriculum. One highlighted change is the requirement for math.

This doesn’t change the requirement for graduation, however. It will only affect those who are applying to state universities beginning with the summer 2015 semester.

These changes will affect students graduating in the academic years 2014-15 and beyond. This means that it will affect juniors this year and all underclassmen.

Previously, students had to have just three credits of math to be a “Qualified Admissions” student. Now, students have two options regarding math credits.

The first option is that students must complete three units of approved math classes, and also score a 22 on the math portion of the ACT.

The second option is that students must complete four units of approved math classes, and one of these units must be taken in the graduating year.

Counselor Debbie Baldwin has a generally positive view on the changes, but worries for students who struggle with math.

“I am in favor of it because it will challenge students, and I also think it will help them prepare better for college curriculum,” Baldwin said. “But for those who struggle with math classes, I think that taking an extra math class will be stressful for students.”

Junior Grace Mader is unaffected by these changes. She plans on attending a qualified admissions school.

“The changes don’t really affect me,” Mader said.

Another change is that students must have three more units of electives before graduating to be a qualified admissions student.
