Fifty students at BHS in grades 9-12 were surveyed about homework procrastination. The survey asked how long they procrastinate, why they procrastinate, and what type of assignments they procrastinate.

When asked how long they wait to do homework after school 17 students said they do it as soon as they get home. However 16 students said they wait 3-4 hours after they get home. As many as six students said they wait up to seven plus hours after they get home.

Why do some students wait so many hours after they get home to finish homework?

When surveyed on the reasons they put off homework a majority of students had the same answer. Many students said they get distracted when they get home but this was only 34% of the results. The survey showed that 44% of kids say that they do not have enough time to finish homework.

What are BHS students doing to cause them to not have enough time to finish their homework?

“Some kids just have too much going on like sports, extra curricular activities and family stuff,” a surveyed student said. “Sometimes we have social activities that we think are more important, and sometimes they are.”

So, if most students do not have time and get distracted with homework, what kind of homework is too much work for their schedules and what type of homework do students get distracted from?

Students were also asked what homework they are more likely to put off? Of the 50 students who were surveyed 30 said they would be most likely to procrastinate long term projects, 16 students said they are most likely to put off homework due over the weekend, and only 14 students said they would procrastinate homework due the next day.

Why do BHS students put off long term projects?

“It is a lot of time to get it done but also a lot of time to forget about it,” another student said..

Students seem think that their peers procrastinate because they are rushed or do not have time.

“We’re given a lot of responsibility and it can be a lot of pressure to get it all done by the due date,” a student said. “I have a lot to do and I am a kid still, so I want free time too but sometimes I am so busy I have to choose free time or homework.”
Most BHS students procrastinate because they do not have enough time to finish homework according to the survey recorded last week.
