The girls cross country team has had a strong season leading up to the 4A State meet. Runners Irelyn Kennedy (senior), Rachel Watkins (junior), Raquelle Heck (senior) and Shea Griffith (junior) are asked questions reflecting on the season so far and looking forward to the remainder of it.
“The girls XC team is doing amazing so far this season,” Kennedy said. “The effort and work being put in during practices and workouts is truly showing on the course.”
The team’s focus remains steady heading into State.
“Our focus as a team has been taking each race as it is,” Kennedy said. “We want to win, but it’s about putting in your best effort and having fun.”
“I am feeling so excited and ready for State,” Watkins said. “Our team has lots of good runners and I believe we can do excellent things.”
Throughout the season, the athletes have faced both challenges and highlights. Heck explains a challenge that the team is overcoming together.
“The biggest struggle is definitely mindset — anyone can run, they just have to win over their mind,” Heck said.
Griffith praises this season with a highlight.
“The best thing about this season is the friendships that I have made,” Griffith said.
“My favorite race will always be the State meet,” Kennedy said. “Wamego is a challenging course, but something is special about the last race and finishing the season on empty.”
The team will aim for the State meet at Wamego in November.
