There are two new head coaches at Baldwin High School with hopes of making their teams better than ever. Football and Soccer each had assistant coaches be elevated to head coaches this year, Jeff Melcher (football) and Ryan Cox (soccer)
Cox has been an assistant coach at BHS, and now the head coach. There are some differences between being a head coach and being an assistant coach.
“There is a lot more work that goes into being a head coach,” Cox said. “Scheduling, practice planning, uniform checkout, etc. are all parts of being a head coach that you don’t have to really deal with as an assistant coach.”
Melcher has a lot of goals/hopes for the football team and really wants to change this football program from past years.
“Our goals are to build consistency and discipline every day (change the culture), compete hard in every game, and continue to develop a program that our school and community can be proud of,” Melcher said. “Of course, we want to win games, but just as important is helping our players grow as teammates and young men, so that success carries beyond football.”
Cox has kept some traditions over the years and has also changed some that he has done in the past.
“A lot of our procedures have carried on,” Cox said. “Having spent 9 years as the assistant, there was a lot of good that we were already doing. There have been a few changes such as how we selected our captains and how some of our practices go that have changed to be more me.”
Melcher and how he thinks the football team has responded to him being the new head coach.
“I think players have responded well,” Melcher said. “They’ve bought into the culture we’re building, and their effort and attitude show that they’re excited about the direction of the program. We’ve had ups and downs, but their willingness to work, improve, and support one another gives me a lot of confidence in where we’re headed. You could ask some of them, I’m sure they would give you their thoughts.”
Both the football and soccer teams are both off to a great start and hope to continue their success for the rest of the season.
