Bulldog wrestlers pre-season ranked third

The wrestling team is getting ready for its season. The team lost some key wrestlers due to the graduating seniors however, have gained from this year’s freshmen. They are excited for the season to start. The Bulldogs are expecting good progress this year.

“We expect to send some boys to state this year,” junior Wyatt Slavin said.

Last year six Bulldogs qualified for state: junior Owen Tuckfield, senior Jon Pratt, (graduated) Tucker Clark, sophomore Thomas Lisher, junior Ben Morgenstern and sophomore Levi Green.

Last year, they had a good season however this year they hope and expect to be even better.

“We’re going to train the same as we have in the past, and be ready for a good post season run,” head coach Kit Harris said. “We have a lot of returning wrestlers who I think know what it takes to earn their way to the state medal stand.”

Over the summer, the wrestlers had many opportunities of getting physically fit for wrestling. Harris held workouts throughout the summer for those who wanted to stay in shape. Many workout opportunities were held in the Baldwin High School weight room during the week days during parts of the summer for those athletes or even non athletes who could go and workout.

Some of the more involved wrestlers competed in Texas over the summer, Fort Worth. The group stayed in a hotel for four days. The first two days, each wrestler individually wrestled 16 matches, eight each day.

“Going to Texas to wrestle was a good and fun experience, we got to experience some really awesome opportunities,” senior Joel Halford said.

In Texas, the team also spent the day at a water park, attented a Texas Rangers game, toured Dallas Cowboys stadium and chalked out the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Baldwin is third in The pre season rankings. Seven Bulldogs were ranked individually: Green, Tuckfield, junior Jon Pratt, seniors Tiler Garcia and Mario Garcia, juniors Jake and Joel Katzer.

“It means absolutly nothing but it is still really cool,” sophomore Levi Green said.

The first practice is on Nov. 17. Their 16 annual purple and white dual is on Dec. 3. The team’s first meet will be in Gardner on Dec. 6.
