Volleyball hosting annual Dig Pink game on Tuesday

According to www.cancer.org, 1 in 8  women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime.  BHS volleyball team is taking part in finding a cure by hosting a “Dig Pink” volleyball match on Sep. 25.

At the BHS game against Louisburg, a variety of activities will be going on. These activities will include a bake sale, a serve and win, donations to put the name of a loved one on a pink volleyball, raffle drawing to get a “box seats” which will be a decorated coach on the gym floor to watch the varsity match, and the the team will be wearing pink jerseys with “JV” on the sleeve in memory of Jeff Valentine (husband to assistant coach Marilee and dad to Dayton and Corey).

Coach Jill Brown is hoping to raise awareness about breast cancer because it affects players on the volleyball team.

“Having a Dig Pink night in a packed gym helps create awareness within the community and hopefully we’ll be able to make a nice donation to the Side-Out Foundation,” Brown said. “The volleyball team, and our community, have been affected by cancer this year as well as in the past, so it makes Dig Pink a little more personal to our team.”

For some families the evening will hit close to home. Valentine has two kids attending BHS, Dayton, a senior on the football team and Corey, a sophomore on the volleyball team. BHS volleyball team parent, Jo Ellis was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and also has a daughter on the team, Mackenzie Ellis. Ellis has another daughter, Paige, who is in the sixth grade at BJHS.

Senior Katie Pattrick is looking forward to being able to be a part of the Dig Pink volleyball game.

“It doesn’t just get the players involved but the whole community,” Pattrick said. “We are playing for something more than volleyball.”

The freshman team will kick things off starting at 4:30 with JV and Varsity to follow. The games will be played at Baldwin Junior High School.
All proceeds will go to the Sideout Foundation to support finding a cure for breast cancer.
