SIDELINE SPORTS: USA tops the charts in London

USA finished on top of the medal charts in the London Olympics. The United States won over China with a medal count with a total of 104 medals. China had 88 medals and Great Britain was third with 65 total medals.

All the major USA teams dominated these Olympics. Basketball won the gold again. After dominating in Beijing the team bounced back with a brand new team and a brand new look.

The USA team lost all of its big men from Beijing. Dwight Howard the major center from 2008 was not able to play based off a back injury.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski was forced to use his major three guys in Lebron James, Kevin Durant, and Carmelo Anthony. The only big men listed on the roster were center Tyson Chandler and power forwards Kevin Love and Anthony Davis.

USA also had dominating forward blake Griffin but he was out with injury. The USA team battled through it all and would not be stopped. The USA team set the Olympic record for points in a game with 156 against Nigeria.

The team went a perfect 8-0 in tournament play and captured the medal that has been talked about for so long.

USA swimmer Michael Phelps captured his final golds in his career in London. Phelps became the most decorated Olympic athlete in history with 22 total medals. After all the controversy with rival American Ryan Lochte, Phelps still proved his reign.

Phelps has only four medals that are not gold and we all remember 2008 where Phelps won a record setting eight gold medals.

The Olymipics had a ton of controversy as well. The US women soccer team won gold, but the big story is how they won the semi finals.

The US team was down to Canada in the last minutes of the game when the referee called a six second violation on the Canadian keeper, then Abby Wambach hit a game tying penalty kick to send the game into extra time, where the US team pulled ahead. The US went on to win in the gold medal game against Japan 2-1.
