For many students of BHS, college is something both exciting as well as scary. Many of us are unsure of exactly what we want to do later on or what we want to major in.

Alumni of BHS Kambree Judy, has found college to be both a learning and a growing experience.

“I am going to school for Occupational Therapy,” she said. “I was at Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kansas but I graduated and transferred to College of Saint Mary in Omaha, NE. I chose Occupational Therapy because I wanted to go into a helping field and I knew everyday at work I would be rewarded with helping someone new.”

College offers a range of flexibility unlike high school. At BHS we go from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. every day other than early release on Fridays for students who are eligible. However, in college you are able to choose what days you are on campus and how many classes you sign up for.

“I’m a full time student. (I got to classes from) 8am to 3:30pm,” she said. “It honestly just depends on the day. Next semester on Mondays I only have class at 9 but Thursdays I have class from 8-3:30.”

Colleges also offer a wide variety of classes that smaller high schools like BHS do not. Students are able to discover new opportunities and new passions they were not aware of when they began.

“My favorite college class I’ve taken so far is Abnormal Psychology my least favorite class by far has to be Natural Hazards and Disasters.”

BHS is a different atmosphere than college. In college you are forced to become more independent whereas at BHS you have help along the way.

“You don’t have someone checking on you to make sure your going to classes or to make sure you are doing your assignments,” she said. “If you didn’t depend on studying much in high school to pass your classes it probably will hit you hard when you go to college because the classes get harder and more intense. Depending on where you go you will most likely be at a school that feels like a family just like Baldwin High School.”

College can be a very different experience for everyone. Some choose to stay close to home whereas others choose to move farther away.

“I do not live in Baldwin and neither does my mom, stepdad, and my two siblings,” she said. “We now live in Belleville, Kansas. We are closer to my two step brothers and my extended family it’s so nice to be so close to all of those people.”
