Jessica Gomez is an alumni from Baldwin High School  who is now attending Kansas University  for journalism. She has studied abroad at Wollongong, Australia, and now is finishing up her senior year at University of Kansas.

  • How was your experience going to BHS?

“Growing up was fun almost at the time it seemed bad. It is all about how you take advantage of it. Being in Baldwin Journalism class gave me the opportunity to learn knowledge that college students did not know how to do. That gave me an experience to teach students in my Journalism class how to write, create a layout and use the cameras.”

  1. How many years have you studied Journalism?

“I have been studying almost three and a half years in college and I did three years in high school.”

  1. What do you learn about and or do in Journalism class?

“I write for University Daily Kansan and it can be incredibly intimidating. In college you want to create a network and connections for yourself. If you write one wrong article or opinionated article you have to be careful because it could be taken out of context.”

  1. Did studying abroad help your Journalism experience?

“Studying abroad helped me in not such a journalistic way but it taught me how to communicate with others. It also helped me to get out of my comfort zone. You learn to be stronger because people who judge you will think you are a typical American. Traveling outside the U.S. helps you grow from more of a personal perspective.”

Q.What career are you thinking about after school?

“I am not sure what I want to do for the rest of my life. There is so much to do out in this world. I have been looking into the FBI I am really into crime investigations and helping our country. Or an editor is my other option.”
