Teens tend to have poor time management when it comes to going to sleep at a decent hour at night. This can be due to lots of different factors such as; stress over homework, grades, and using the time as personal time to unwind. The National Library of Medicine says that 45% of teens surveyed are going to sleep later than midnight every night. This has caused teens to be tired and leads to falling asleep during class and struggling to concentrate during lessons.
This is a problem because when teenagers are coming to school tired and unaware of their surroundings, they miss things during class. Missing information during class can lead to stress over grades on assignments and tests. Ruthann Richter, a Stanford Medicine student, said that getting less sleep can lead to drowsy driving incidents that could have been prevented. As well as causing stress anxiety and depression that could lead to suicidal thoughts.
This issue can be resolved by students organizing their schedules and accounting for the 9 hours of sleep needed, according to John Hopkins Medicine Center. If the school start time is 8 a.m then students should be going to sleep around 9:30 to 10 p.m. For some teens with jobs and other responsibilities, it might not be possible, but it is important for them to try and prioritize how they are performing at school.
In conclusion the way to solve the problem of stress and anxiety throughout the school year is to find what teens are missing and for many that is getting good sleep throughout the night. Teens should do their best to manage how they are spending their time and try to install healthy habits into their mind so they can be at their best and be prepared for day-to-day activities.
