Sexist dress codes need to go

All across the country girls are being taken out of their classes for being a “distraction” to their peers. They are losing valuable class time because their shoulders are showing and people can’t keep their eyes to themselves. If a change should be made, it should be where people look, and not what clothes people choose to wear.

In PE many girls were asked to change their shirt because it showed their shoulders, or a small part of their bra, whereas the boys were allowed to wear anything they wanted and would take their shirts off during class. It’s not ok to discriminate against girls who express themselves how they dress. If it’s warm outside it is ok to wear a tank top. I am not saying that it should get out of hand, but for the most part the things people are being dress coded for are so minor that it shouldn’t matter.

Students should be viewed as people who are trying to learn, not distractions. Being taken out of class because what you are wearing is arbitrarily deemed “inappropriate” is more of a distraction than the clothes themselves. If someone wants to be comfortable during the school day, they should have that right within reason.

Authoritative figures blame the people who are wearing the “distracting” clothes, and not the people who are being distracted. If people can’t keep their eyes to themselves when people are wearing a tank top, then they will not be able to focus when they are wearing a sweatshirt.
