OPINION: Sugar is an addictive problem that must be dealt with

For thousands of years, humans have used sugar to sweeten the taste of food and our daily nutrition. While this certainly makes for a better tasting treat, sugar has grown to become a dangerous, deadly, and addictive substance that Americans will have to learn to control.

In an article posted on MindBodyGreen.com, “14 Mind-Blowing Facts About Sugar,” it is said that not only do Americans eat around 150 pounds of sugar over their lifetime, but sugars addictive nature leads the average human to continue to keep eating more. This leads to a vicious cycle in which people eat more and more sugar, to overcome the addictive feelings that it gives off.

Not everyone eats too large of an amount of sugar, but for those who do, many diseases and negative side effects can hurt them. This includes obesity, diabetes, tooth decay, ADHD, and many other harmful effects. Sugar also has the trait of weakening the human immune system. As sugar is consumed, the human body becomes more and more susceptible to illness. To overcome these illnesses, the common practice is to then seek medical attention, and to consume drugs that can also be less than ideal for the body.

Refined Sugar is a substance that does not contribute to the human body in any way. As a nation, we need to combat the amount of sugar that enters the human body, before the results become worse than what we’re witnessing in our present day. Sugar must not continue to grow in popularity, it will lead the U.S. and the world down a dangerous path.
