OPINION: Video games entertainment, not violence starters

When people think of video games they think of a pastimes for kids, others think it is going to cause the kids of our generations to think and react violently. I believe that video games do not cause violence in teenagers and children since they do know what is real life and what is not. The people who think differently of video games cannot even find a clear link back to video games from violent tendencies.

Parents think that a video game will cause their child to become a criminal, but that is not the case, games usually have a justice force that will stop them and put an end to it showing a child that this will happen if they do it in the real world. It is a relaxant and vent to kids who had a rough day so they would not go out and harm the people who wrecked their day. It is like a punching bag taking all the blows effectively calming the player down.

Violent juvenile acts of crime has been declining in the United States as Violent video game popularity has increased, procons.org says the arrest rate for juvenile murders has fallen 71.8% between 1995 and 2008. While the arrest rate for all juvenile crimes has declined 49.3%, during this time video game sales have more than quadrupled. A 2004 U.S. Secret Service review even said that school-based attacks only one-eighth of the attackers had shown an interest into violent games. Most of them are just violent teens being drawn in by a violent game to see and be in the violent entertainment.

Video games have only been out for the past three or so decades so what were people who cause violent acts being linked back to? Violent acts happen no matter what people just flock to the newest thing as the base of all violent tendencies just so they have something to complain about. The level of control a kid or teen has in a video game does not make anything fluid enough for them wanting to go out and cause trouble and violence. Games are marked how they are, parents should check the rating of a game and think about their child before they get a game, thats why they have rating systems. If anything it should not be linked back to the game but who supplied the game to the underaged teen.

Video games should have a different approach from what people see nowadays. Most see it as an outlet to escape the everyday live at home. Some get to see it as a privilege after doing chores or homework and would not do anything to get it taken away. The video game companies do not try to make game purposely violent to cause teens to act that way, it is what people want to believe in. That is why video games should not be always labeled as violence starters but as entertainment like what they originally were intended to do.
