Recently, Baldwin High School Choir went to Baker University for a competition that they’ve been putting hard work into practicing for with teacher Shelby Hanna. The choir group has been practicing since January, up until the day they attended the competition.
“Choir has been practicing all second semester from January, they would practice every day until the day we went to the competition,” Hanna said.
Hanna was visibly extremely proud of her groups, expressing that she thought they all did great. Hanna even expressed that everyone gave it their all within the groups. Hanna explained about how she believed that the groups all did their best, clearly happy.
“In the competition, I believe that the best part of it was we all went together, just seeing them support each other even if they weren’t in one of the three groups was amazing.” Hanna said, “I don’t believe the competition itself was difficult, it was beating the standard the judges gave us and the preparation and discipline that it required, aiming for better.
Hanna went on to explain how points worked afterward, even adding on how they chose their songs. Hanna had spent a lot of time picking their music and then practiced with the kids on the notes.
“So there were three different groups that performed, and we chose our songs on the official Music Performance List,” Hanna said. “The Music Performance List is a list of music where the state of Kansas puts songs that they think are good enough to practice for on.”
Hanna finally spoke about how points would work, how those ones were the best rating and the three judges.
“There were three judges, all of which judged each of our groups, and they gave our groups the best rating, which is a one,” Hanna said, “and basically we had to beat the standards, which is what judges were judging us on, and we did.”
