Every year Stuart O’Neil gets to choose a BHS band member to be the Drum Major. This has been a part of the band for many years. Their main role is to do little behind the scene tasks but mainly being the biggest part of leadership.
“I pick who is our Drum Major by who is interested in the position and then they will apply and audition for it,” O’Neil said. “They have to write a personal statement discussing their strengths, provide a letter of recommendation, and then audition in front of the entire band. Alli (Cramer) actually auditioned for the position during her junior year, but it went to another student. It was a good audition, but it just did not work out. Alli auditioned again this year, and she nailed it.”
Cramer has been a part of the band ever since 5th grade. She has continued to grow in playing the trombone. She is now a part of band, and jazz band.
“I am most excited about all of the band and jazz band performances and having fun with my friends at these events,” Cramer said.
Cramer has enjoyed seeing how hard the people in our band really work. She feels like it is easier to notice now since she is not playing with them as much. She believes that they do put in 100 percent.
“Alli will direct the band at the Kansas State Fair and at the Maple Leaf Festival Parade. She may also direct some pep band performances when I am unable to attend,” O’Neil said.
Cramer describes her role as something similar to being a captain of a sports team. Leading them through various events, and is a communicator between the band and O’Neil.
The BHS band has a very busy schedule ahead. They have State Fair, Maple Leaf Festival, Concerts, Pep band, and competitions.
