Despite being a small town, Baldwin City Kansas is fortunate to have a college in its town.  Baker University is a private university and was founded in 1858. Many BHS and BJHS teachers attended Baker University, including Kit Harris, Jesse Austin, Brent Brittingham and Reggie Harris.

“My best memories at Baker are mostly football or throwing memories and fun times,” Austin said. “It was a great time being on the field and interacting with the student section every time our team scored on them.”

“Get to know people on campus,” Austin said. “I think in order to appreciate Baker you need to be a part of sporting events and events put on by the university as much as you can.”

For Harris, attending Baker was a family affair.

“My parents were employed at Baker as professors then administrators, and my dad coached,” Harris said. “My brother and I both attended. We were a Baker family. The university was a huge part of my family for all of our lives. I love the place and attending school there was a great experience.”

Many BHS graduates went to Baker University for college, Teagan Troute who graduated in 2019.

Baker in Baldwin is very helpful for students that live in Baldwin

“It feels different-It can be what you make it,” Troute said. “I like the opportunity to live on the Baker campus and experience but Ialso  like being able to take my laundry home and get a meal.”

“I love the opportunity to have a good education and to continue a sport I love to play,” Troute said.

For the class of 2020 Emma Grossoehme, the atmosphere of Baker University is one of the more appealing things to her.

“I love the atmosphere and the beautiful campus.” Grossoehme said. “ Growing up here made me more fond of the loving community.”
