Towards the end of their High School years, students are faced with a big decision. Students may either decide if they want to go onto college, go into the military, or go into a business that does not require a college degree.

“I was thinking about going to go to KU,” sophomore Rachael Fritzsche said. “I want to study music education to become a band director.”

High school students may not know what they want to do after they are through with school. There are some different things they can do to help them out.

“They just need to keep exploring their options,” counselor Autumn Weiss said. “They could take one of our interest surveys. They could also job shadow someone that is in a field that they might be interested in.”

Students tend to come across what field they want to do by doing something the enjoy.

“A big part in deciding to major in exercise science was, that I have been involved with sports my whole life,” graduate Sierra McKinney said. “I’ve seen injuries happen and what they have to do in rehab and get back to playing, so being able to help athletes and others recover from injuries is what I’m passionate about. I’ve been set on what I wanted to do since probably my sophomore or junior year of high school.”

Many students know what they want to do, but they do not know where they want to go to college to pursue their interest

“I want to become an elephant trainer,” junior Kylie O’Brien said. “I have to major in zoology or Biology, but I do not know what college I want to attend.”

They also have to look into colleges that offer what career they are looking to go in. Some colleges do not offer a program in what they want. They have to find a college that will fit with their education plan and anything else they plan to do.

“A big part of choosing the right college for me was athletics, but aside from that I knew Baker was the right choice because I knew it is a prestigious school and the rate of getting into grad school is really high,” McKinney said. “The connections that Baker has for people out of college is great. The exercise science programs here are talked up a lot and is one of the best programs. I wanted to go somewhere that would benefit me the most in my journey to success.”
