Drop out rates are increasing in the United States and could have some difficult long-term outcomes. On average a dropout earns less money, are unhappy or unhealthy, end up in jail and most important fail to have jobs hire. According to Education Week, every year over 1.2 million in just the United States have dropped out in the year of 2010. That is 7,000 students a day. After World War II United states were  number one in graduation rates and now we are ranked 22nd out of 27 countries.

The number one reason students drop out is because of life events or situations. “In 2008-2012 there were 563,000 dropouts,” Education Week stated. “One third of those drop outs were because of work.” Other reasons teenagers drop out is because maybe they got pregnant or even arrested. Failing classes or having to redo a year has a mass number of dropouts because they do not want to do more work.

However, schools with bullying have an increase on dropouts. Teachers and staff need to worry more about the climate of. What is happening nowadays is that, children are afraid to go to school. High school especially those who have indifference because they are bullied too much and threatened. According to, Do Something.org approximately 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying. The causes a student to be behind and not even want to finish school.

Dropping out can affect your future life as well. Your decisions to dropping out can cause unemployment. When they look at your paperwork and see you didn’t graduate high school they will assume you can not keep a job either. Having a job with no diploma would also pay less. Students could as well end up in incarnation. That means it’s a correctional facility, such as a jail or juvenile detention center, is also a more likely scenario for high school dropouts. As stated in National Dropout Prevention center/network, six percent of dropouts were in an incarceration between the ages of 16-24.

What can we do to prevent the dropout rate? It could start off with high schools being more involved with the students. Make them feel welcomed and not so isolated. Keep watch of bullies and how kids treat others. The most important solution would be raising the dropout age. That is so you can not drop out until you are an adult that can make your own decisions.
