‘Need a boost?’ Are energy drinks a healthy option?

Energy is an important thing to have. Some people sleep in, some people drink coffee, and some people rely on energy drinks such as Monster, Red Bull and Amp to get the boost of energy they need to get through the day, but how does drinking them affect a person’s health?

Ingredients inside an average energy drink are vitamin B12, vitamin B6, caffeine, vitamin B3, and taurine. It has been concluded from a recent study at energyfiend.com that caffeine is the only ingredient that actually affects the consumer. An average energy drink can contain between 70 and 200 milligrams of caffeine whereas an 8 ounce cup of coffee normally contains between 110-150 milligrams and Dr. Pepper soda contains around 41 milligrams of caffeine.

“I do [drink energy drinks] occasionally,” junior Keifer Halpin said. “Only when I have to work early in the morning or I’m trying to stay up late. I am aware it can be unhealthy, especially if consumed in large quantities.”
