Students can earn tunes based on attendance

“Hey I just met you and this is crazy, but here’s my number so call me maybe!” Back on Sept. 25, students at Baldwin High School were jamming out to songs like Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” and Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” while in the commons. These tunes were sponsored by Student Council, who participated in National One-Hit Wonder Day, pumping signature songs from the speaker system throughout the entire school day. This was a StuCo planned event, part of their random holiday celebrations.  The holiday celebration was a hit among students and staff and StuCo decided to take the music a step further.

“After ‘One-Hit Wonder Day,’ we remembered how nice it is to have in the commons,” StuCo advisor Danielle Balsman said. “We worked with Mr. McKim on a way to earn the chance for music.”

Students will be able to earn music in the commons based on attendance records for the previous week. If the school as a whole accrues less than 25 unexcused tardies over the course of a week, music will be played in the commons on the following Friday. StuCo hopes this incentive helps improve weekly attendance at BHS and creates a more positive vibe within the school.

The selected playlist of music will be rotated, allowing different groups, staff members, clubs and teams the opportunity to play their personal selections of music in the hallways.

“One week could be NHS, then next is choir, and then the secretaries, etc.,” said Balsman. “Once a group is selected to make the playlist, they will have until Thursday of that week to give me a list of songs and I will load them via StuCo’s Spotify account.”

Starting this week, attendance at BHS will determine whether music is played in the commons. To ensure that music will be played next Friday, be sure to attend school on time this week.
