Regulating homework time

Homework is perceived as nonnegotiable. It is a way for students to continue growing and working even after they leave school property. But how much is too much? Is it worth stressing students to the point of tears? Is it worth keeping students up until the wee hours of the morning and damaging their sleep patterns?

While it is true that homework keeps a students brain active for longer, sometimes engaging in other activities is just as vital for success. While some homework is necessary, there is a limit. The National Education Association recommends no more than 10 minutes of homework per grade level each night with a maximum of 2.5 hours for high school students. Many in the education field are not even aware of these recommendations.

The relativity of the work assigned should also be considered. It should have a purpose, because “busywork” does nothing but take up time. Drilling a skill into student’s heads multiple times will not always reach the desired result. A struggling child needs one-on-one time with the teacher, not more homework. Taking the time to teach a concept to each student during class or on their own time is more important than requiring them to do assignment after assignment on their own.

Receiving an education is the most important part of school. If a student is not understanding what is going on in class, more homework will only confuse them. Many teachers can check a student’s understanding of a concept in just five problems. If they are not doing well on their homework, they will not do well on the test and they will not have an understanding of the topic at hand. Homework can be a useful thing, but it should not be pushed to the point of doing more harm to the child than good.
