College Biology travels to Florida

This is the first year that College Biology is offering a trip to Florida. They have been fundraising money for the trip since the beginning of this school year. The group will be leaving May 29 and returning June 3.

The class will be working with an organization called Coastal Wildlife Club. Where they will be helping them locate and monitor turtle nesting sites on Sarasota Beach Florida.

“We are all very excited,” Biology teacher Scott Crenshaw said. “There will be two adults and eight students that will be on the trip.”

Crenshaw found this opportunity last year when he was on vacation. That was when he talked with the Turtle Patrol to find out more information.

“On my trip I saw baby sea turtles and adult sea turtles. I thought they were the coolest creatures ever,” Crenshaw said. “That is when I began to think what a great experience this would be for them. The area is also famous for fossilized shark teeth in the sand so we will be collecting teeth and identifying shark species.”

The students that will be going on the trip have been working hard to get their trip planned out to the very last detail.

“We are all really excited to have this opportunity to get the chance to go on such an extraordinary adventure to save sea turtles in Florida,” senior Heidi Halford said. “It’s not every day that a Kansas student gets to go to the ocean on a field trip.”

In order for the students to be able to go on this trip they had to be enrolled in College Biology and participate in the fundraisers.
