Pom, Band travel to “Happiest Place on Earth”

“The Happiest Place on Earth” is Walt Disney’s slogan to attract people to their park. The BHS Pom Squad and Band will be able to experience just that on Jan 17. The Pom Squad will be dancing to the band’s music.

In order to get this opportunity the teams had to go through an audition process. Both teams submitted a tape of their performances, one from KU Band Day and another from The Maple Leaf Festival. The Pom Squad and Band try to go to Walt Disney Land every four years to represent Baldwin City’s talent.

Preparation for the trip began last summer for the Pom Squad from coordinating dance steps to practicing to fundraising. The girls that are going on the Pom Squad had to fundraise $1,000 each. They did this by working Thomas the Train, Mary Kay Sales, Cherry Dale Sales, Worlds of Fun, Pizza Hut, Applebees and Smokey’s BBQ & Cafe.

“I am beyond excited for this trip,” Pommer Amanda Miller said. “I have been practicing every chance I get to make sure I nail my counts.”

The girls of the Pom Squad had to make up a new routine to match the band’s music. The band also had to come up with a one new song for the trip and will also be using the same one they played during half time at the football games.

“I feel Disney is going to be very exciting and fun,” Band Member Arianna Mihesuah said. “I’m glad I get to be a part of representing our school, it’s very much an honor.”

The teams will be marching at the Magic Kingdom; they will also be joined by other schools that audition as well. It will be like a parade that the visitors of the park that day could watch. The two teams will be there representing BHS for three days and will return to town Jan 20.

“I think it is a great experience for the kids,” Pom coach Gayle Dempsey said. “And I hope it makes the community proud of us.”
