GSA explores during first year

The Gay-Straight Alliance is one of the newest additions to the many clubs available for Baldwin High School students.

“I started GSA because I wanted to establish a safer, healthier and more conscientious social setting in the school,” senior President and Founder Cody Keener said.

GSA members organize after-school meetings in which students discuss topics and complete activities.

The members seem to enjoy the meetings and activities.

“It’s a blast,” said junior member Andrea Baltzell. “One of the meetings I went to we made ribbons.”

The GSA has done other activities as well.

“The first activity, we took three slips of paper, wrote an inequality on one, something wrong in the world on the other, and something to work toward on the last one,” Keener said. “We put those together and made posters, and it has broadened to the whole school. Lots of people have become involved.”

However, the GSA is not stopping now, they are already planning future events.

“It is not completely set in stone, but we are working on getting Pastor Jacob Cloud from Ives Chapel to come talk to us,” Keener said. “He will have an open discussion with us to help dispel some myths about religion and prejudice based on sexual orientation.”

GSA is trying to acquire guest speakers and make their program the best it can be. However, it was only a year ago the program was not even around. If interested in joining, contact Keener for details on meetings and activities.
