“My name is Mariska Breedlove, I am 15 years old and I train colts. I got into it by living on a farm and being around horses my whole life. I work with about three horses every year. My favorite part about training colts is seeing the horses exceed in whatever event I am training them to do with their owner. My least favorite part is when they buck me off and I get hurt. One time I was training this pony and everything was going good so far. We were riding her and she randomly bucked me off, my foot got caught in the stirrups and I got dragged. She turned out to be a good horse after that though so It was all good. I basically start by doing groundwork and desensitizing them and then I put the first ride on them. It depends on if you are seasoning it up for someone or starting them from the basics on how long it takes. It can take around 3-9 months.”
