Crystal Engemann is teacher and coach at BHS. She is involved in many activities including FCA, volleyball, basketball and track.
Q : How many years have you been teaching and coaching?
“I have been teaching for 20 years. I started as a 2nd grade teacher, then moved to Elementary PE, and now teach PE at the JH level. I have coached for about 12 years, anything from rec sports for my own kids to JH level and a couple years at the HS level. I loved the competitiveness at the HS level, but I love coaching at the JH level. I get to see so much growth with this age and they really want to learn and just have fun.”
Q: Why did you choose to be a PE teacher?
“I was at a point in my life where being an elementary teacher wasn’t enjoyable anymore, just too much testing and being told what/how to teach. I was burnt out and needed a change. I knew I wanted to continue working with kids and the PE teacher at my school was leaving, so I combined my love of sports and staying active with my love of working with kids and earned my Physical Education certification.”
Q: What made you choose Baldwin?
“We loved the small town feel and wanted to raise our boys in a more rural town. So, we moved from Missouri and just picked Baldwin. I first got a teaching job in Gardner but knew I eventually wanted to teach in Baldwin and work in the same schools that my sons would attend.”
Q: When did you know you wanted to become a teacher?
“My undergrad is in Criminal Justice and after working as a Juvenile Corrections Officer for 5 years, I knew I wanted to be a more positive role model for kids and help them succeed in life. I was 27 years old when I went back to school to be a teacher.”
Q: How do you try to make an impact at BHS?
“My goal is really to set the foundation for my students as they move to the High School, both in their character and work ethic. I also try to continue to support all of my past students by attending and encouraging them at as many events as I can. It is such a joy to see so many students stay involved in sports and the many after school activities that BHS has.”
Q: Whats your favorite part about teaching?
“I love building relationships with students and supporting them in school, in their sports career, and just in life.”
