Armed with chalk and kindness, the Art Club came together to create chalk drawings for suicide prevention, organized by social worker Cydney Novotney, with the support of the Art Club and Art teacher Beccy Weaver. Through this action, the club aimed to spread positivity and raise awareness in a way that truly sticks with their peers.
“My favorite part about this tradition was coming up with kind quotes and coloring them with other Art Club members,” Mohsen said. “It’s meaningful to know that students walking into school are seeing those positive messages.”
Art Club members and anyone who wanted to join got together and wrote positive affirmations on the sidewalk in front of the high school.
The event drew more students than expected—many of them showing up early to contribute before the first bell rang.
“I was surprised by how many people showed up, especially because it was right before school,” Mohsen said
People wrote positive affirmations such as “You belong,” “You’re not alone,” and “There is no one just like you.”
“My favorite chalk drawing was probably the one that I worked on with Ms. Weaver and Laila. It said ‘We are all different flowers growing in the same garden’ and we added super cute flowers around it,” Art Club co-president Raquelle Heck said.
As a reward for their hard work and dedication to spreading mental health awareness, the participants enjoyed free powdered donuts, muffins, cinnamon rolls, and orange juice.
“I enjoyed giving back to the community by spreading mental health awareness and learning about the large amount of love the BHS community has to give. I also enjoyed the food,” Art Club member Lilli Schmidt said.
