Every year Lawrence Arts Center puts on plays and musicals for young aspiring performers. This year, two students from Baldwin auditioned and got into this year’s musical, The Wizard of Oz. 8th grader Layne Brittingham and 7th grader Blake Brittingham auditioned on Friday, April 26th, and found out their roles on Friday, May 3rd. Auditioning however, was not an easy thing.
“To audition it was really nerve racking,” Layne Brittingham said. “You got a monologue and the pianist played music as you sang.”
Blake had other thoughts on the audition.
“I felt very happy and excited to start practicing for the musical,” Blake said. “I also felt a bit of relief because I was very anxious to see what role I would get.”
After the audition Layne and Blake had to wait one week before results were posted on the Lawrence Arts Center website.
“I was really excited,” Layne said. “ I was excited because I didn’t think I’d end up getting a big role, or any role, but I got the Wizard of Oz.”
Like Layne, Blake found out her role as well.
“I got Aunt Em,” Blake said. “She is the aunt of Dorothy Gale and wife of Uncle Henry.”
Along with Layne and Blake, Baldwin choir director Rachel Naugtin is in charge of music for the musical as the music director.
“I’m really happy Mrs. Naughtin is working with us,” Layne said. “It is nice to know someone I will be working with so I have an adult I know I can go to for questions right at the beginning.”
The show nights will be later in the summer.
“I am most excited for the show nights,” Blake said. “They are in June and I will have many practices leading up to them starting May 28.”
