Greta Davis, Helping others through Faith

What does it take to be a missionary? For one Baldwin High School senior, Great Davis, she plans on making it happen.

“I will be joining YWAM (Youth With A Mission) in Asheville North Carolina this following October,” Davis said.

Every missionary program is different and some programs may be better for some and not others.

“The mission of YWAM is to train young people ages 17-25 to spread the good news of Jesus around the world,” Davis said.

YWAM Asheville helps to spread the word of God, make genuine connections with people in Asheville and abroad, as well as work with The Reshma Project to expose and bring to light human trafficking, aid survivors, and empower those still in human trafficking to escape.

“I wanted to join YWAM because I wanted to grow my faith in Christ surrounded by other people my age,” Davis said. “I also have a passion for other cultures and countries and I wanted to spread the word of God and learn other ways of life.”

Mission trips can be long or short depending on what is happening with it and where it is at. Some trips even call for months of training prior to spreading the word of God.

“The program that I’m doing through YWAM is called DTS (Discipleship Training School),” Davis said. “It will be 3 months in Asheville, North Carolina, and another 2.5 to 3 months abroad somewhere.”

Although there will be a lot of excitement when becoming a missionary, there will also usually be nerves.

“I’m most nervous about talking to strangers and people that won’t even speak my language,” Davis said. “I’m going to have to learn how to be bold and talk to people about Jesus. I am most excited to make new friends and learn about God with them. I’m also excited because at the Asheville base we make free Indian food for any travelers or homeless people every Friday where we will go and deliver it to them and have the opportunity to talk to those who want to.
