Benton Flory: from India to Baldwin City

The uniqueness about international adoptions are the stories behind them. These children bring the world together. We each have our own story of where we started.

The story of Benton Flory and his family is inspiring. Flory was adopted from Mumbai, India when he was just two years old.

“My mom was eighteen years old when she had me,” Flory said. “She kept me for 25 days and took me to the orphanage.”

His mother had the option of having an abortion or not, but she decided to keep him.

Then came the Florys. She was pregnant with one of their children at the time and were in India to adopt Savita (Flory’s adopted sister). They saw Flory when they were at the orphanage. “When they saw me, I was the cutest thing ever.” Flory said. “A year later, they came back for me.”

He came home to America where he was scared at first.

“I can remember bits and pieces of when my parents brought me home. I was terrified,” Flory said. “When I first got here I didn’t adjust very well because I didn’t know anybody, but later on I did.”

Flory was not  an only child once he got home. He has three older sisters, a younger sister and a little brother who was also adopted from India years later.

“At first it was crazy, and then once I got to know them, it became normal,” Flory said.

He has been living a wonderful life in America ever since. Flory has made lots of life-long friends and cherishes his family that adopted him.

“I wouldn’t have met all the awesome people in my life if my parents didn’t decide to adopt me.” Flory said.

There are many adopted children in the world. It is amazing how parents travel all around the world and back to get their children that they love. To give children a home and family is a gift.
