From Luxembourg to the U.S: Sports differences

In the next exchange student interview, we asked Anne Knepper about sports difference in her country, Luxembourg, and in America. She talked about the common sports in Luxembourg and which ones she takes part in.

Are sports in America different from sports in Luxembourg?

  • “We have some sports that are different from the sports in Luxembourg. But the sports are mainly the same. I am not sure about football in Luxembourg, there might be some clubs but it is not popular at all. We do not have baseball either.”

If yes, how are they different?

  • “There are no big difference, I mean every sport is the same. One difference though is that if we do a sport we do it in a club instead of doing it in school like in America.”

What are the main sports in your country?

  • “I would say that the favorite sport in Luxembourg is soccer. But our National Team is not very good. We have two cyclists brothers who are one of the best in the world and we also have a Luxemburgish cycling team with international athletes in it.”

Did you involve  yourself in any sports in your home country?

  • “At home I play tennis in a club. I practice only twice a week but I go on runs sometimes because it keeps me in shape. I do have P.E. in school, too.”

Were you in any sport here in America?

  • ” I joined the tennis team here at Baldwin High. I had so much fun and I had a successful season and also won several medals.”

How would you compare how you celebrate sports in  Luxembourg and in America?

  • “The sports here are celebrated differently than the sports at home. In America, you cheer for your school and your classmates. When I have a game at home, there is only my family but not a big crowd. We watch national or international sports on TV or in pubs with friends.”
