Students excel in entrepreneurship competition

$3,750

Would you like the chance at winning $1,500? Four Baldwin High School students, Kaitlynn Bono, Brooke Peterson, Anthony Dunn and Grady McCune, competed at the 2nd annual Douglas County Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge on Friday for that very chance.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for all students to partake in,” FBLA sponsor and business teacher Bronté Bailey said. “It gives real life skills, critical thinking, public speaking and presenting your ideas in a confident way.”

Students compete in four categories; business plan, elevator pitch, business presentation, and tradeshow scores accumulate together to pick the winners. It is an exciting new opportunity for everyone involved.

“I enjoyed my experience,” freshman Brooke Peterson said. “It was very interesting to see the judges and how the sort of event works.”

With a some hard work, anyone could win the YEC.

“It is good business knowledge to have and it’s good to get out there. if you have an idea for a business then why not bring it to life,” junior Anthony Dunn said, “go out there and do something with it. I loved it.”

In the end BHS took home $3,750 in prizes and a lot of happy students. Kaitlynn Bono was awarded first place, $1,500, and an all expenses paid trip to the state competition at K-State in April. At this years state competition BHS’s very own Bronté Bailey will be presenting a speech as Entrepreneurship Teacher of the Year.

“It will be a nerve racking and very new experience i never thought possible,” Bailey said. “Stay tuned.”
