With the closing of all schools in Kansas by Governor Laura Kelly on March 17, it unfortunately meant the cancellation of the spring sports season as well. These sports included girls soccer, track and field, softball, baseball, golf and boys tennis.

“I was really disappointed for the athletes, especially the seniors,” track and field coach Mike Spielman said. “So much of high school, for students, are all the extra activities outside of the classroom, so for that to be cancelled is going to be hard.”

Going along with what Spielman said about the seniors not being able to play their last spring sport season, softball coach Chad Scoby feels this will be hard on all the players, not just the seniors.

“The devastating part about the high school season being canceled is knowing the seniors won’t play another game as a Bulldog,” Scoby said. “Missing a season is tough for all the girls, but when your last year gets ripped away so quickly it’s hard to comprehend.”

Not only are the coaches upset, but the seniors are sad that they will not get another spring season. Seniors such as Jordan Barth and Anna Burnett will not get to complete their fourth season in some of their favorite sports.

“I was really looking forward to spring sports this year,” Barth said. “Not only was I competing in my fourth year of golf but I also had just previously joined the track team. It’s unfortunate that I had to miss some of those potential fun memories, but in the end everyone’s health is more important.”

“It’s very sad to have gotten the opportunity of my senior year spring sports taken away from me and I was really looking forward to seeing what I and all of my teammates would accomplish this year,” Burnett said. ”I am lucky to get another chance at playing soccer in college, but losing my last track season is definitely heartbreaking and it sucks that it had to end like this but I am very thankful for the memories I made the last three years.”
