Makenzie Blackman and Misty Price are a few of the many new students at BHS.

A whopping number of and 5 new main teachers, 30 new students have enrolled at Baldwin High School for the 2018-19 school year. Even though it can be a scary first few days it can end in an amazing year.

Baldwin City is a growing town, the current population is around 4,677 people. With around 2,879 students attending Baker University. In comparison to Wichita, Baldwin City is almost 84 times smaller.

“Here since you guys are such a small community with a small school, it’s hard for you guys to allow outsiders in,” said junior Makenzie Blackman, who moved from Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

Being a new student at can be rather nerve racking. BHS has gained a decent amount of new students making the student enrollment number this year 450 students.

“You feel kinda awkward at first, because you are in a new environment,” Blackman said. “Not very many people are willing to talk to the new kid, it makes you feel like an alien at first.”

“Here you guys have much nicer things,” Blackman said, “ like how the students get handed iPads.”

Each student at BHS gets an iPad for them to do their work on. An iPad can cost up to $699.

Being one of the thirty new students can be scary at first, but with help from the other 420 students that have been here, can make the year better.

“I get to meet new people and explore more activities,” sophomore Misty Price said. “ Even though it’s very different from my old school, I sometimes get confused on what I’m supposed to be doing here.”

The school is now a 4A school, so sports teams will be having different competition this year.

“With lots of new students we will be playing harder teams,” said Kit Harris, “but all of our athletes work hard and are up for the challenge. I like that we have a larger enrollment, we have had a lot of great additions to our student body.”
