Freshmen adjust to new school with help of ‘Link Crew’

On Aug. 22, 107 freshmen walked through the doors of Baldwin High School and to the start of the next four years of their lives. The freshmen were greeted at the door by the selected juniors and seniors, better known as the Link Crew.

“I really enjoyed being a part of Link,” sponsor Jason Crowder said. “On the Freshmen First Day it was a lot of fun to see the kids interact with the freshmen and make connections. I enjoyed seeing our Link leaders meeting with the freshmen throughout the year and I hope that continues.

The 2013 school year was Crowder and Spanish teacher Katie Marten’s first year as Link sponsors.

“It was extremely hard, Ms. Marten and I spent two weeks before school started researching and preparing for the Freshmen First Day,” Crowder said. “(We were) trying to get things accomplished for it, so I think next year will be easier.

Many freshmen are involved with various sports and clubs throughout the year. Freshman Erin Voigts is involved in volleyball, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA).

“Volleyball is a very fun activity,” Voigts said. “I look forward to continuing (volleyball) throughout high school.

While freshmen are adapting well to sports and clubs, they also must adapt to high school classes.

“I think they are adjusting quite nicely,”  Algebra teacher Danielle Balsman said. “They seemed very prepared and it did not take long for them to get acclimated. I think they have a lot to offer, they are a pretty intelligent class.

The freshmen have adapted well into high school and prepare for the next four years. Freshman Cori Thompson is among the students who are looking forward to those years.

“My goal for high school is to play on the varsity team in softball,” Thompson said. “I am excited to make new friends and hope to enjoy high school while I am still here.”
